Interim Ministry

Being an Interim Pastor is different from being an installed pastor.

I like to think of it as something like Mary Poppins was to the Banks Family.

When an installed pastor leaves, the congregation needs someone to pop in and help the congregation see themselves from a different point of view. In interim ministry, we think of this in terms of a process that the pastor leads the congregation through.

The Interim Process has five tasks:

Interim Task #1: Coming to Terms with History
Interim Task #2: Discovering a New Identity
Interim Task #3: Shifts of Power
Interim Task #4: Re-Initiating Denominational Linkage
Interim Task #5: Commitments to a New Leadership and a New Future

I'll write more about each task as we engage them.

Then, when the time is right, she packs her bags, and like Mary Poppins, she makes a quick exit - off to find another church who needs someone in between installed pastors.

As in the case with Mary Poppins and the Banks children, the Interim Pastor doesn't take over the tasks and responsibilities of the members of the congregation. Rather, the Interim Pastor is there to provide that 'spoonful of sugar' to help the congregation understand the change it is going through and to help smooth the way for the next installed pastor. There is still much to be done to prepare for the incoming installed pastor!

With its theme of preparation, I can't think of a better time to begin interim ministry with you all than Advent! So, together, let us prepare the way! First for Jesus, and then, after Advent and Christmastide, for your next installed pastor.

All God's Good Gifts to you!
